Question:

Can any Olympic wrestling experts tell me if Abrahamian really got screwed?

I can't find any details on the story other than "he was mad with the ref and the judges." Now what he did at the medal ceremony was pretty pathetic, but did he have a legitimate gripe?

  1. Abrahamian won the second round 2-1. Then before the 3rd starts the referees declare the Italian as winner. The motivation was a warning to Abrahamian that no one has seen. The referees refused to do a video review when the Swedish coach asked for it. Later during the day the referees changed their minds on why Abrahamian was disqualified, now stating they overruled the point they gave him at the end of round 2 and gave it to the Italian instead. Clearly this was not a correct call which can be seen on the videos. The Italian on the other hand could have been judged for fleeing the mat earlier but was not.

  2. Stalling or fleeing the mat is a judge's call.  Usually you get a warning and then the points deducted.  It is tough to tell how any judge is going to score it.  He was hoping his star status would give him the benefit of the doubt.

He didn't get screwed, just unlucky. The best thing would have been for him to attack.
