  1. There are 2 types of vitamins:

    1. water soluble - vitamin C and all the B vitamins

    2. fat soluble - A,D,E,K

It is very hard to overdose in water soluble vitamins because if we have more than we need we excrete them in our urine. However if you do consume insanely large amounts of for example vitamin C it can precipitate as oxalate stones in the urinary tract (aka kidney stones)

On the other hand - fat soluble vitamins store in our fat throughout our body. So if you take too much of those vitamins you can overdose and the vitamins may become toxic for your body. This condition is also referred to as hypervitaminosis

    Vitamine A hypervitaminosis:

occurs after long time with increases consumption vitamin A rich food (like liver) or supplements.

itching of skin, painful skin swellings, gingivitis (swollen.bleeding gums), hyperirritability, coarse or absent hair, in infants - headache, gastrointestinal problems, jaundice.

    Vitamin D hypervitaminosis:

is closely related to calcium metabolism in our body,

weakness, fatigue, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. With prolonged use it can lead to calcification of vessels, heart, lung, kidney

    Vitamin E hypervitaminosis:

has low toxicity but overdose can lead to nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, weakness, and rare skin rash

    Vitamin K hypervitaminosis:

extremely large doses are needed for overdose, but it can cause hemolytic anemia in newborns and hemolysis (break down of red blood cells) in people whose red blood cells are effected by genetic condition called G6PD  (or glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency - in other words the red blood cells are fragile because they have missing a metabolic enzymes).

  2. "Hypervitaminosis" simply means the over-consumption of vitamin(s).

The consequences/complications really depend on which of the vitamins (and minerals, since they are often found in multivitamin products too) were over-consumed.

For example, overdosing on vitamin A can cause skin discoloration, and in severe cases, liver problems:

Over-consumption of vitamin D will, on the other hand, cause hypercalcemia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypercalcem...

Iron, although not a vitamin per se, is found in many multivitamin products.  Over-consumption of iron can lead to iron overload, which in turn cause damage to the liver, heart, and pancreas, similar to hemochromatosis:

Take a look at the label of the vitamin product you are concerned about, and see what the ingredients are.  Unfortunately, you'll have to look up the ingredients one-by-one to see how each will affect your health when over-consumed.

    Good health to you.
