  1. Yes, bonsai trees CAN be grown indoors, as long as they get their mandatory 3-4 hrs of sunlight every day (light is essential to their growth).

Here are some indoor bonsai trees which will do well both indoors & outdoors in temperatures above 50 degrees F:

    - Ginseng Ficus Bonsai Tree

    - Hawaiian Umbrella Bonsai Tree

    - Oriental Ficus Coiled Bonsai Tree

  2. Short answer is no.  However, many tropical and subtropical, (ficus etc.)  trees can be successfully grown under the right conditions.  You must provide the correct level of light and humidity to have some success.

Others have had success with more temperate trees indoors.  This requires quite a bit of investment in lighting, humidity, watering, air circulation equipment, etc.

Here's a link of someone that is quite successful growing trees indoors:

  3. Bonsai is a miniaturized version of a standard plant. The habitat of the standard is the same as the ideal habitat for the bonsai version. Check out this site and compare that plant with these examples which have info on indoor/outdoor designations. There are care instructions too.
