Crude oil is priced by the barrel.  Gasoline is a retail product and is priced per gallon or litre at the pump.

The Chart on the right shows oil prices in terms of gold. You can see it has been the same for quite some time. As our dollar looses its value the price of oil goes up, because all oil in the world is purchased using USD.
