I was just looking at the estimated property taxes on the property I was interested in buying and noticed it said it included a 20% homestead exemption. Is that something I would be able to get too or not? The property is in rhode island if that matters.

  1. I know that in Texas this is all lined out in great detail on our local tax district website.  Check with your local government website.

Here you have to have owned and lived in the home as your primary home on January 1st of the year you first claim it as your homestead and then you have to file the form before March 31st of that year.  You can not claim any other property as your homestead.

In our area this homestead will save you about $400 a year.  That is not a lot but over several years it really mounts up.

  2. Well, you have to qualify yourself.    You have to be a legal resident of RI and it must be owner occupied.   You also have to have a clean record, with no judgements against you.

  3. Any one can homestead there house any time. You have to check in your state what it means when you homestead and what the resrictions are ect.
