Question:

Can any motorbike be restricted to put out 33bhp?

I'm still on my 33bhp restricted licence but I like the idea of a larger bike because then I don't have to change it. I particularly like the idea of shaft drive Hondas like the NTV650 etc, can these bikes be restricted does anyone know?

  1. http://www.batmotorcycles.co.uk/33bhp.as...

This is a partial list, doesn't mention the NTV but there is no reason it couldn't be restricted, trouble is they are popular with couriers and could be a little tired.

  2. yes...even a YAMAHA R1 can be restricted down to 33bhp.

  3. yes it can be done, by fitting smaller inlet jets in the carbie and restricting the diameter of the inlet manifold on older bikies, or simply remapping the electronic control unit on late models. this will only be a waste of time and money as your licencing authority will only recognise the manufacturers figure.

  4. Yes, any bike can be restricted down to 33bhp.

In the UK you should really have the kit installed by an authorised dealer or bike shop who will then issue you with a valid installation certificate. Some insurance companies ask for this. Plus always handy if the police stop you for an offence etc.

That said, its not a legal requirement to have them fit it, you can do it yourself. The only problem is whether it does indeed drop the power to the correct 33bhp. Ive never known anyone have their bikes checked to see if they are indeed 33bhp.

We had a 1997 foxeye cbr900 fireblade with the restrictors in the inlets. When we dynod it, it came back at 74.6 bhp at 13,500 rpm

So more than double the stated 33bhp on the certificate he had, fitted by a decent company too, which i wont mention.

When we did get it down to 32bhp it ran so c**p, the owner opted to take it out completely.

You can get the kits off ebay for most bikes.

  5. I wouldn't make any modification of this sort on any motorcycle at all as experience shows that once you get the full permit, you shall get very bored of riding around in a restricted manner. The NTV 650 from Honda is an excellent bike to ride as the handling and the power is very predictable. Its engine is not much over that amount of power in any case. Get the full permit and get the NTV650 or the PC800. They are really excellent all round maschines. As an alternative, the Suzuki VX800 meets the same requirements.
