I am thinking about becoming a nurse. I like the idea of doing a job where you actually help people when they need it most. I would like to do a job where you are busy all day, doing a variety of tasks, and I imagine being a nurse would be like that.

There is just one thing bothering me, I'm not a very friendly, confident person. I suffer from nerves a little, but I am working on it and getting better all the time. It's just the being very friendly thing, is that sort of personality essential to be a nurse? I'm not like really hostile or anything, I've just never been REALLY open and very chatty. But I am very good at just getting the job done to the best of my ability. Any thoughts??? PLEASE!!!

  1. I know you specifically asked for a nurses opinion - and I'm not a nurse.

But one thing to note - yes some nurses are chatty, but you know what - sometimes people prefer not to have to have small talk with people they dont know! When i was sick in hospital it was all I could do to talk to my family - let alone the nurse!

And also - over the course of your nursing training you would develop people skills so I wouldnt worry about it.

I think nursing is a great profession - and if you want to do it you should definately go for it!

  2. you could still be a nurse. you can work in surgery or places where there is minimal conversation interaction with the patients b/c they are sedated.  having to take clinical during school may help your friendliness and confidence.  see if you can shadow someone that would be a good way to see what we do on a daily basis.
