Family Understanding
The story “Sonny’s Blues†by author James Baldwin has good example of family relationship and also the story involves the musical artist. Two brothers in the story had different life choices. In the story narrator trying to understand his brother but only in very end the narrator was finally able to see and understand what music did for Sonny.
From the beginning of this family, where brothers was just growing up it seems to me the family had good relationship. Narrator saw how Sonny his younger brother was born and he “heard the first words he had ever spoken†(47). Narrator remembered Sonny first steps and how he would catch him. Sonny was like his father “Sonny was the apple of his father’s eye.â€Â(49) Father loved Sonny and father was fighting for him. Sometimes, there was a time when father and his son was fitting but maybe playing or father wanted to teach him something I don’t know. They were so much a like in the way of theirs thought but not in the way how they looked. I think when they were still boys they had good family relationship. However, then when they grow up it seems to me that parent had hard time to control theirs children because mother was worry about her son Sonny. She doesn’t want him to do something strange. I think she was worry about Sony because he was kind of bad boy. She commended to her older son to watch for Sonny, because she was thinking that she would die soon. But his older brother was pretty shore that nothing would happen to Sonny and he promised to watch for him. However he forgot his promise and it was hard for them to understand each other probably because of their seven years difference between each other.
After the death of the mother the narrator finally remembered his promise and wanted to help his brother and when narrator hears that Sonny got to a prison, he was worried about his brother. Although, Sonny was addicted to the drugs and was gone to prison he still saw that Sonny was a good boy. Brothers had hard time to kip in touch however after a wile Sonny wrote a letter where he wanted to see and hear from his brother. Sonny did something bad and he was glad that his parents don’t see what he did. I think theirs relation ship was okay, because they was nice to each other. Finally after Sonny got out from prison they met each other and they were happy to see each other. Also narrator’s children were happy to see Sonny and Isabel, I suppose narrator’s wife, was glad to see him as well and she was very nice to him. That evening seems to me were happy time for this family. It seems to me that narrator wanted rally help Sonny with his future life. Narrator provided him a living and he wanted Sonny to finish school. When Sonny said that he wanted to join army narrator was mad at him because he wanted something better for him. After Sonny agreed to go to school, narrator got him piano because Sonny wanted to be a jazz musician, although narrator did not understand his brother. “I simply couldn’t see why on earth he’d want to spend his time hanging around nightclubs, clowning around on bandstandsâ€Â(52). However, this part of the story shows that narrator cared about his brother.
Sonny wanted to be musician but his brother did not understand him. Probably music is hard to be understood not only for narrator but for many other people. For example my father don’t understand music without lyrics, however for me personal music sometimes are beautiful without lyrics. I don’t know exactly where the music would come from but I think it is just given to us. In the family where Sonny lived music was not understood. Sonny played his piano every day; he played from morning to night. “It wasn’t like living with a person at all, it was like living with sound†(55). They didn’t understand his music maybe because the man who creates the music is hearing something else probably more then music. And also I don’t know how passion Sonny was to his music but from my personal experience it is hard for me to play piano for two hours and I don’t know how he could someone play for all day. Maybe this is just a story or Sonny had only one chance that he wanted to live for in his life. I thought every thing was going fine until a day where Isabel mother yelled at Sonny, because he was in the white girl’s apartment with other musicians. After this situation I see that Isabel mother did not like Sonny. And then Sony joined the navy because he couldn’t live with Isabel folks. However, he left maybe because he wanted to quiet doing drugs. After navy Sonny and his older brother still did not understand each other and therefore did not want to see each other and to talk to each other. Then after a short time they finally talk to each other. This time narrator promised that he would never fail his brother again. After Sonny invited to a bur where he preformed his blues, narrator started to fill his music and understand his brother. “Yet, there was no battle in his face now†(63). Narrator saw how music changed Sonny’s world and how music allowed him to be himself and express himself to others. It seems that they were back to the happy life. Understanding is what can bring people to more happy life.
This story showed us good example of relationship, not exactly good from the beginning of the story but interesting how brothers come to the understanding. Probably narrator had to hear and see how Sonny’s music changed him and maybe give him a new life. In our life I think is also important to understand each other. For narrator it was hard to understand his younger brother. Maybe narrator had to change his way of thinking which then he finally understood his brother. In life I think to understand other first we have to change our personality or thought to understand others.
