THE GOOD LIFE—THE MEANING OF HAPPINESS

Aristotle defined the function of being human (i.e., human purpose) when he stated, “if we declare that the function of man is a certain form of life, and define that form of life as the exercise of the soul's faculties and activities in association with rational principle, and say that the function of a good man is to perform these activities well and rightly, and if a function is well performed when it is performed in accordance with its own proper excellence--from these premises it follows that the Good of man is the active exercise of his soul’s faculties in conformity with excellence or virtue, or if there be several human excellences or virtues, in conformity with the best and most perfect among them”- (Book I, Ch. 7 PP Nic.+Eth.1098a14-15)

In other words, the overall human function is the soul's activity which expresses or requires reason. The activity of reasoning is what makes you human. The essence of being human is having the ability to reason: all humans possess the essence, but not all function according to it (some have the ability, but do not use it). Furthermore, all human actions taken together comprise the good. Everything we do throughout our lives contributes to the overall function with its own individual quality.

If we live well, i.e., according to the proper virtues, this will allow us to achieve what the Greeks called 'eudaimonia'.

    Eudaimonia

Most things are desired for the sake of something else (e.g., we desire food because we want to be healthy), but Aristotle argued that there must be something desired only for its own sake. This he identified as happiness, well-being or flourishing (Greek eudaimonia literally "having a good guardian spirit"). When asked "Why do you desire this?" and then "Well, why do you desire that?" in response to each answer, many people will eventually stop at "in order to be happy." Eudaimonia is not a means to an end, but an end in itself—in fact, Aristotle argued that it was commonly recognized as the ultimate goal of life (Book I, Ch. 4). Happiness thus understood is not a mood or temporary state, but a state achieved through a lifetime of virtuous action, accompanied by some measure of good fortune.

    INTELLECTUAL AND MORAL VIRTUES

Aristotle divides the virtues into intellectual and moral virtues.  Each of these virtues can be acquired through practice over time. A person becomes more courageous by continually choosing courageous acts over cowardly or foolhardy ones, for example.

    THE HAPPY MEDIAN

Each virtue falls between two vices. Virtue is like the mean because it is the intermediate between two vices. On this model a triad is formed with one vice on either end (excess or deficiency) and the virtue as the intermediate. If one’s character is too near either vice, then the person will incur blame but if one’s character is near the intermediate, the person deserves praise. Proper participation in each of these three pillars is necessary for a person to lead a virtuous and therefore happy life.

    SOME VIRTUES

See if you can understand what the excess and the deficiency are for each virtue, and, whether the excess or the deficiency is the more “attractive” vice, and why?

    Courage

    Temperance (moderation)

Liberality (moderation in giving and taking money)

Magnificence or magnanimity (correctly dealing with great wealth or power)

Pride (claiming what is due to you)

Gentleness (moderation with respect to anger)

    Agreeableness

    Truthfulness

    Wit

    How do you feel today?

  15. When you can accept where you are and who you are in life and enjoy the friends, family , people and events that are around you and that touch your life. When you can say that you enjoy life, look forward to each day and deal with the situations that you are able to, and accept those that you cannot deal with or resolve.... to be optimistic, positive and enthusiastic about your life........ that is happiness, or at least part of the way there

  16. happiness cannot be explained but it can be experienced. It is that feeling of satisfaction and peace which comes when things go as planned

  17. HAPPINESS ALSO MEANS PROSPERITY,WEALTH,ASSET, PROPERTY,MONEY ETC.

  18. happiness cannot be felt - that is to confuse it with pleasure.

it is a state of the mind that obtains when we achieve an intrinsically valuable end.

it is a concrete whole made of parts, and these elements of happiness are unique to each individual and consist in that persons total set of life projects.  (see John Stuart Mill's Utilitarianism)

also, as fred feldman warns, we should not confuse the causes of happiness with happiness itself.  in other words, having a meaningful relationship might cause me to be happy, but that is not the same as its being happiness.

  19. "Happiness depends upon achievement of personally significant goals and leading a balanced life."

  23. Happiness is the state of mind which can be achieved by forgetting miseries of  past and not worrying about future. Think positive, remove pollution from mind and live on your own experiences and according to what you think without comparing yourself with others.

  24. Happiness is a tricky one to understand for so many people in the world who do not have it.  It is probably easier for them to explain what happiness isn't, because they live it everyday.

I think the first misconception, is that so many people think that they will FIND happiness one day.  They think when they get that awesome job, or meet that perfect person to marry.  No, no, no.... these are examples of people defining happiness with people and things outside of themselves.

We as equal human beings are born with happiness inside us.  The problem is that happiness is shoved down, and covered in all our stress, sorrow, fear, anger, etc...  and before you know it, it is no where in site, and long forgotten.

The first step in finding your happiness is to get rid of all that negativity that is covering it up. Dig deep, weed it out, and before you know it your happiness with be down at the bottom shining bright.... just waiting for you to bring it out.

This is why you cannot base your happiness on anything outside yourself.  People disappoint us, and come and go in and out of our lives. Material obejects are only temporary and the newness wears off pretty fast.  So, as you see these external forces are not contant.  Your essence is constant.  So, as you find your happiness you need to love yourself, and cherish that happiness.  If you truly, truly find the real happiness inside, you will have the most incredible feeling and natural high ON LIFE!
