You can buy a Smart Card from most of the major stations which have a computerized railway ticket vending at the counters... this includes CST, Churchgate, Andheri, Vashi, etc....

Also, a Smart Costs Rs. 100 and not Rs. 150.. You get 52 Rs. validity the first time you buy it and the rest is kept as security deposit. And then you can recharge only in denominations of 50.

further to the above, at every station , you will have a smart card machine, where in you have to select the to and from station and it will print the ticket and the amount will be automatically debited from your card
