  1. conservation of natural resources, the wise use of the earth's resources by humanity. The term conservation came into use in the late 19th cent. and referred to the management, mainly for economic reasons, of such valuable natural resources as timber, fish, game, topsoil, pastureland, and minerals, and also to the preservation of forests (see forestry), wildlife (see wildlife refuge), parkland, wilderness, and watershed areas. In recent years the science of ecology has clarified the workings of the biosphere; i.e., the complex interrelationships among humans, other animals, plants, and the physical environment. At the same time burgeoning population and industry and the ensuing pollution have demonstrated how easily delicately balanced ecological relationships can be disrupted (see air pollution; water pollution; solid waste).

Conservation of natural resources is now usually embraced in the broader conception of conserving the earth itself by protecting its capacity for self-renewal. Particularly complex are the problems of nonrenewable resources such as oil and coal and other minerals in great demand. Current thinking also favors the protection of entire ecological regions by the creation of “biosphere reserves.” Examples of such conservation areas include the Great Barrier Reef off Australia and Adirondack State Park in the United States. The importance of reconciling human use and conservation beyond the boundaries of parks has become another important issue.

  2. This is a pretty broad question.  You can find lots of information on the web, but you may need to narrow it down a bit in your searches.  For example, energy conservation or water conservation. And then think about what you want to know about conservation.  Do you want a basic definition,? Do you want to know how you can participate in conservation? Do you want to know what the government is doing to conserve natural resources?

Here are a few links that may get you started:

Each state should also have a Department of Conservation and Natural Resources - Google them by state

  3. No environmental groups seem to be addressing this issue. Even conservationists don't want to talk about it. I guess they all want to do conservation at work but not change their habits enough at home to make a difference. The raising of cattle causes more global warming than all of the car emmissions on the planet.

Over 80% of the dry tropical forests from northern Costa Rica to Mexico have been cut down. Areas of this size and larger have been cut down throughout the world including the Amazon, Indonesia, the Congo and other rain forests. The temperature after removing the rain forest has risen dramatically in these large tracts of land. The weather pattern also changes from this deforestation in each locality and they become drier. When these huge areas have their trees removed, erosion dumps millions of tons of sediment into the rivers that flow into the oceans. This sediment slowly suffocates the polyps of the precious coral reefs in the tropics.

What is the main reason for cutting these rain forests down? The main reason is to make room to raise cattle, not logging as many people think. With logging they generally cut down large hardwoods. To raise cow meat they cut down everything. In Central America much of the beef is exported to the United States. What can the average person do? eat soy, legumes and nuts as a protein source. This is a better way to practice sustainability. If the beef is grown in the United States sorry that isn't sustainable either. A person who eats cow meat (beef) as their main protein source requires about 20 acres of land each year and over 2000 gallons of precious water to raise that steer for protein. That is not sustainability. A person eating soy for their main source of protein only requires one acre of land and about 40 gallons of water each year to grow it. Also, soy doesn't add millions of tons of methane gas each year to our atmosphere. it actually absorbs co2. cows do produce over 100 million tons of global warming methane gas in the U.S. alone. Cattle excrement also is adding to major pollution problems in our water systems today. Stop eating beef! Or if you absolutely can't stop eating beef, cut back to once a week or once a month. if you must eat a meat chicken is much less destructive to the environment than beef, here in the tropics. Besides, refraining from eating beef is healthier in the long run.

If you want to take responsibility in helping save our planet from global warming, deforestation of the rain forests, dying coral reefs there are many other eating alternatives. please, eat to live, don't live to eat.

For our children's sake and the sake of the rain forests, coral reefs and the entire planet we need to step up and do something other than practice over indulgence. Cavemen had to hunt to get their protein and that was ok. Then we started raising animals to get our protein and that was needed. Now we know how to get all of the protein we need from plants. So it is time to evolve another step and stop the senseless cruelty to raising animals for food and also help control global warming and its effects at the same time.

  4. A.) Be careful with wikipedia as a source. I have found several mistakes.

There are many areas of conservation of natural resources. I will pick trees because they are pretty gosh darn important. It starts by knowing what exactly we are using trees for. I am sure you yourself could think of many different examples of how we use trees. Then think about how they are being wasted (junk mail, paper, ect.). What's being done to slow down the process. What exactly are you doing to contribute?

Arbor day plants trees in areas where forest have been badly burned. They also make trees available to people at low costs. I got 10 free trees for a 10 dollar membership. I planted all ten of them at my house. Buy recycled :D.

Sorry if the information was vague. It's really just simple. Here are couple of links. There is one for arbor day and there is another one to stop junk mail. :D

Use less. Advocate for what resources are the most important to you. Volunteer and help out when and where you can. Spread the word.

** In regards to the protein statement made above. We do not get all of our protein from vegetable sources naturally. We must supplement if we become vegetarians/vegans. I think that lifestyle is most humane and shows a great deal of disipline. The animals themselves do not emit more emissions but, I would have to say that harvesting the feed, running the factory, transporting the (this is very sad to say) product. Not to mention animals have feelings and that factory farming is a horrible practice.

** Also just because there are issues else where that we may not be able to influence doesn't mean that you don't have some sort of control in your own home. Deforestation of the rain forest is awful and is definitely a cause worth fighting for. You can find an organization that is worthy of submitting a donation and they can buy acarage to keep people from mowing it down.

It's hard to pick every cause and they are all so important. We as individuals need to pick a variety so all important issues are addressed.
