  1. If you are having this kind of problem, it means that you are "trying." This causes you to be unable to clear you mind. Let go of this any other attachment that you might have.

Take yourself to a quiet place. Ask yourself to eliminate all thoughts for 1 minute. If thoughts come into your mind, note them as you would a bird flying by and gently dismiss them. As you get better at 1 minute, go to two minutes and etc. It is very hard to stop thinking, even for a minute, so be gentle with yourself and admire what you have achieved.

You will find that even a small amount of non-thinking time is surprisingly refreshing, so be sure that you enjoy that on your way to a deeper consciousness.

It is only be letting go of certain precepts and attachments that we are able to gain what we want. Getting to a deeper consciousness for me feels like the universe suddenly opens up and I am in a huge space where no rules apply and I can rest without worry. I feel one with everything. One way, when you are really starting to meditate, to tell that you are making progress, is when the time period that you have chosen not to think, flies by and seems like no time at all.

I suggest you read Pema Chodrun's book, "Getting Unstuck." It also comes on CD, which is wonderful to listen to. She will assist you in the practice I mentioned above.
