Once you start to get bad sectors on a hard drive it really is time to think of a replacement as sooner or later you will get another and another till the drive becomes unreadable.

the noise you hear is the heads trying to read the bad sector it will get stuck in a loop, the drive knows the data is in that track but can not read it so it try's again and again.

Now is the time to save your data to cdrom and replace the drive.

Sounds like hard drive failure from what i easily searched on the forums.
