I don't know any thing about my family heritage or history. So, if anyone can help me with my family background ground please let me know something. If it's a website and stuff I need it to be free because i can't afford it.

But please help me. This is very important to me. I NEED TO KNOW!!! All i know so far is either my great grand mother or my great great grandmother was full blooded cherokee. However I would like to know if its true and if it is a way to find out the names of my ancestors and a few things about them.

I would like to search as far back as i possibly can.

If you give me a suggestion and are familiar with the suggestion, please let me know of some stuff that i would have to have ready, or already know like names, numbers and just stuff like that.

Help me everyone and make all the suggestions that you can.

Thanks if you help.

  1. You have to take it back one generation at a time. Start with your parents or grandparents. Birth certificates have the parents name and place of birth listed generally so there is your starting point. Once you get back to your grandparents start on the census records and searching the family trees on line. A lot of the research may already be done for you. Just remember to check the facts for yourself.

  2. If your great great grandmother did not migrate to the Reservations, chances are she is not recorded as Cherokee but black.  My great grandmother was a full blood choctaw indiana however she was always recorded as black, as was my great grandfather who was French Creole and Black Foot Indian.  I was told by my grandmother and two of her siblings on difference occassions that this was the case; however while I was able to research her family back to 1860 all census recorded them as Black or *****.  The National Archives may have some free information that may assist you if your grandmother or great grandmother was on a reservation during the Indian census rolls.
