  1. I live near Chicago and I left (alone) on a late November road trip to go to Montana (this was like 20 years ago). It was snowing lightly when I left at around 10:00 that evening. Before I got to the Wisconsin state line the snow stopped and the temperature dropped. As I was driving along on Interstate 90, a faint haze or glare appeared on my windshield. The first thing I did was to turn on the defroster. A couple of moments later I realized that the glare (as I now really thought it was) was still there. There was a car some ways behind me, so I figured his headlights were reflecting somehow into my car. A few minutes later I noticed again that the same glare was there, but the car was not behind me anymore. I was very perplexed. After a couple more moments of thinking about what it could be, it finally dawned on me. Northern Lights!

A few minutes after I passed into Wisconsin I found what I was looking for. A roadside pullout. There was a little place that was marked to pull over. It was not a rest area or a picnic area, just a pull out. Well, I took it. I pulled off the pavement and onto the grass to get away from the headlights passing on the highway and found a berm to park behind. The place was in total darkness! I couldn't believe my luck at finding the absolute perfect vantage point so easily! I was completely shielded from any light, except for the Northern Lights. I got out of the car and was completely dazzled. It was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. The sky was dancing and flickering different colors all around. Sixty percent of the sky was involved. And you may or may not believe this, but there was a sound! I could hear them! It was like the sound you can hear if you stand under high tension electric lines. I swear I heard that sound. I stood there for an hour freezing my butt off in complete utter awe. God gave me a real gift that night. One I'll never forget. The hilight of my November Montana vacation was not the record 70 degree temperatures I would run into in the beautiful mountains there, but the zero degree Northern Lights show I received in Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin. As I continued my drive (I could stand the cold no longer), I could see a curtain hanging in the sky to the north all throughout the night and when dawn broke at the border of South Dakota, the Northern Lights faded to daylight. I hope you like my story.
