A rancher is adding a corral to his barn so that the barn opens directly into the corral(the coral is a rectangular shape, with 3 side, 2width and 1 length), he has 195 feet of fencing left over from another project. Find the greatest possible area for his corral using this length of fence. (hint: the corral with maximum area is not a square) if you are having geometry now, please look in page 24. problem 41 to see the drawing, please show me how to do it

  1. If the width pieces are each w, the length is (195 - 2w) so the area formula is A = w(195 - 2w) = 195w - 2w^2

    It's a quadratic and they have their maximum values when w = -b over 2a which here is w = -195 over 2(-2); -195/-4 = 48.75

    so plug in 48.75 for w and see what it is.
