Transformers are in high demand due to the increased global demand.  Prices are substantially driven by the cost of the materials -- many of which are at or near all time high prices.

Core steel

Copper

Aluminum

Mild Steel

Insulating oil

In the US, transformer prices have more than doubled in the past four years.  From a distribution transformer perspective, the costs will continue to climb as the DOE efficiencies go into effect in 2010.

If you're looking for low cost transformers, I suggest you search the internet for used transformer vendors.  It will really depend on whether they have a match for your primary and secondary voltages in the MVA rating.
