  1. a black one

  2. I have an International RH  Air-Lite Soft Touch helmet.  Love it and get compliments all the time!  I think they are on clearance at State Line Tack.  That's how I got mine.  Great deal- but hurry! I don't know how long they'll be there.

  3. Troxel is the best inexpensive brand out there. I would definately recommend a ventalated helmet over the traditional velveteen style. The ventalated helmets are lightweight, comfortable, and help keep your head cool.

This is a good starter helmet: http://www.troxelhelmets.com/products/fe... . Most larger tack stores will sell it, as well as many online retailers such as http://www.doversaddlery.com . Make sure if you buy it online, that you find it in a store first to make sure you get the right size! It is important for the helmet to fit.

Another awesome, but slightly more expensive helmet is the Tipperary Sportage Helmet. I have this helmet and absolutely love it! It has many of the same features, but looks (and weighs) just about the same as a bicycle helmet! http://www.doversaddlery.com/product.asp...

Make sure that any helmet you buy for riding is ASTM and SEI certified. There are a few "just for looks" helmets out there, so be careful! Most of those are show helmets and are not meant for protection of any sort.

  4. Troxels are awesome for several reasons.

    1.  They are affordable

Easily replaced after a hard fall or for little kids, after they get lost or left somewhere (it'll happen trust me)

    2.  They are vented and breathe

    Great in southern Summer Heat

    3.  They are light weight

I use them for my austic students that HATE helements, they don't notice them there as much

    4.  Certain types are adjustable

Great if a friend comes to ride with ur kid, it can use ur kid's helment.

    5.  They are plastic

Mud and dust wipe off easily and it's not ruined by rain.

If your child is planning on showing you'll need a tradtional black felt helment or a cover for a plastic one.  But for just schooling at the barn or lessons I recommend the Troxel's and International Brands.  Plus they make actual child sizes.

Whatever brand you get make sure it's SEI approved and meets ASTM standars for equestrian activies.  The owner's mannaul that comes with the helement or the care and cleaning instructions or somewhere inside the helment will say this.  That is the main thing with any riding  helement u buy, no matter the brand, just be sure it's SEI approved and ur fine.

  5. Troxel helmets are great!  I have a one year old, and whe she is old enough to ride, that is what she will have.

I was saved from a serious head injury by a Troxel, and my doctor said that any other helmet would have failed to protect me because of how the Troxel was made.  I wrote the company thanking them, and they sent me a brand new replacement 100% gratis!

  6. Troxel is a good brand, so is International. I find international helmets to fit more comfortably. Make sure the helmet is SEI and ASTM approved for equestrian use, if it is then you should be fine with any brand. You can get a practice helmet for around 30 dollars.

Don't buy a hunt cap, these are not approved (these usually don't have straps, and are lighter/narrower, they are intended for certian competitions and serve no purpose other then being nice to look at)

If your child is showing buy a black velvet helmet. If it is for practicing then a plastic helmet (that come in a variety of fun colors) is just fine.

If you want to spend a lot of money get a GPA helmet, they have usually the stripe down the front. They are the fad on the hunter/jumper circiut, they are really comfy and good helmets. But there is no major benifit to these helmets, and they cost around 400 dollars.

    Never buy a used helmet.

Do not use a bike helmet. They are not designed for horse riding, and the stable's insurance will most likely have a problem with bike helmets as they are not proper equipment.

Don't buy a helmet with the velcro adjustable sides, I have had problems with the velcro getting dirty, not sticking then the helmet doesn't fit right.

  7. Troxel makes many different styles and most are not to bad price wise. They have some western styles as well as many styles for english riding. They are well made and available online or in most tack shops.

Check out any online horse supply place they should carry at least a few of the style they make,

  8. I have always owned Troxel helmets and they seem to hold up pretty well. Right now I own the Sierra and I am extremely  happy with it.

  9. Yes:) Cost: 34.95 USD    We use Ageis: Boy or girl, this one fits really nice and is inexpencive yet meets all standards. Kids grow so fast we like the adustable feature! And the price: Most of my friends won't spend $100 plus! on a Troxel or similar. Get one MADE for children.(They'll wear it.)

Note: never, never  never ever  use a bike helmet for horse riding!!I  It  is NOT safe. Thanks for asking and Ride happy:)

  10. Troxel and International Riding Helmets make excellent helmets for kids. I have used both products with great success, and they are fully certified by the ASTM/SEI. These helmets are also vented, and come in a wide variety of styles and colors. There are also some show styles available from both of these companies; check the catalogs and websites of companies like Stateline and Dover for details and prices. If your child is very young (<5 years old) then you may want to consider using a bicycle helmet for every day riding- and there are many of these available.  Good luck, and I hope this helps.

  11. I generally like the Troxel brand of helmets.  I had an International I liked, too.
