  1. remove it and time.

  2. I assume the vet has seen this horse.  What did they tell you?  Probably no running, which means a nice daily walk without the weight of a rider or saddle.  It also should mean no grain & cut back on the oat hay if that is what you feed them.  A good replacement is high quality alfalfa in moderation & Timothy.  If a horse can't run, it doesn't need the extra energy of the old diet it had before the injury.  Keep plenty of water available 24/7.  If the horse if taking medications (like butte), you should add another bucket to ensure the supply never runs out...hydration is key to healing.  Be careful when you rub the legs of this horse around the injured area.  They'll let you know if you got too close!  It's best to stay away from the injured area & make sure it is wrapped every night so the injured area doesn't get reinjured.  Horses can & do live with this type of an injury, but you can have it removed or get injection around it to cushion the area.  Have an x-ray & an ultrasound done so you can actually see what you are dealing with.  Talk to a vet.  Good luck.  P.S.  You should also ask about wrapping the knee with an ice pack, as some horses take to them quite well & others don't stand still for them.  Like I said, ask the vet & look at the pictures!  I have seen many small splint fractures disappear over time, but every animal is different & every owner has preferences.  Some horses end up having to be euthanized because the owners don't properly care for their animal & it ends up lamer than it was at the time of the injury.

  3. splints tend to be a minor injury that you can train ahorse through, with the proper care. I recommend cooling it out if its hot, perhaps a little uptite under bandages and hosing of the splint with cold water. If its a race horse I would also just jog him a mile a day. once cooled out I would switch to a mixture of balls solution and dmso under bandages. Also try using either a blueboot or the gold boot(a type of ultra sound boot) to stimulate heeling. If that doesn't work blister the horse and turn him out for a few months til its set.
