  1. If you want a great deal on travel go to AAA.

I know it sounds wierd, but my cousins and I were planning a trip to Italy and she grabbed a bunch of books and planning stuff at AAA and they outline everything.  You can get great plans & deals on lots of hotels and great reviews.  I believe you can walk into any AAA and get the books for free.

  2. Florence cheap accommodations you can also check http://www.tuscanweb.com

  3. for Rome look at

    www.acj.it/tritone

rates from 85 euro a nigth

the flat is in the center near the spanish steps and trevi fountain

    ciao

    Alessandro

  4. Florence.. wonderful, i am italian, from turin, and i was in florence last weekend.. i was in a hotel called "la casa del lago", cheap, clean and really beautiful, with a wonderful view on the river arno...

however, unluckily, in this period there arent a lot of free hotel, but if you go on this website http://www.firenzealbergo.it/default_ita... you can find all the free hotel for the days you need for... but is in my language, but i think there should be a "button" to click on it to get the page in english... about rome i don't know, i've never been there.. =p

  6. Most of the cheaper options for Rome will be one & two star places or better hotels outside of the center.

I use venere.com to book hotels in Italy (I live in northern Italy and travel often). After you select city and dates, you can sort by area of the city, price, ratings, and read reviews of specific places. http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/#o=pric...

If you're looking for cheap and close in Rome, a good option may be the Hotel Romano http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/kolosse... It's very close to the Forum & Colosseum and within walking distance of two metro stops and the Termini train station.

Another option about 2 blocks to Roma Termini is the Serena http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/esquili...

The cheaper options in Florence are mostly one or two star places near the train station or in outlying districts. No elevators, but not a problem unless you have particularly heavy luggage. One good, cheap option that's easy walking distance to the train station and close to Piazza Duomo is the Hotel Bavaria http://en.venere.com/hotels_florence/duo...

You might be interested in a stay at a convent or monastery in Italy. These tend to be some of the best lodging bargains available. There are a number of them in Rome. In some places in Italy, a monestary stay may be free. see: http://www.monasterystays.com/?show=page... or http://www.santasusanna.org/comingtorome...

My brother and his wife stayed in a convent in Rome and loved it. A niece and nephew later did the same and also recommended it.
