I have given more than required places on the way so that you can decide about where to take lunch/dinner etc.. The road is in excellent condition except surat> vadodara where massive road e-construction, fly-over making etc are going on.

Take the Pune Mumbai expressway upto Kalamboli, go towards Vashi but dont turn left for Mumbai, follow the signposts for Thane via Airoli Mulund Rd which will bring you to NH3 turn right towards Thane and take Ghodbunder Rd all the way upto Fountain Hotel junction at Vasai creek bridge.  Over here turn right and you will be on NH8.  Proceed along NH8 till Baroda. Todays paper reports that the Mumbra byepass road is open.  I dont know where it exits in New Bombay but you could enquire from truck drivers along the way if it will be a short cut for you. I just read the post above mine, if you follow that route you are going all the way from Vashi upto Chembur and back to Thane unnecessarily.
