  1. In Ancient Rome, the Vestal Virgins were the virgin holy priests of Vesta, the Goddess of the hearth (fireplace). After devoting 30 years of service to the Goddess, they were allowed to go back into normal life. They are supposed to be one of the few, maybe the only, female priests among all the ancient civilizations.

  2. The Vestal virgins were priestesses dedicated to the service of the goddess Vesta; important figures in Roman cultic worship, they bore many responsibilities but enjoyed numerous benefits, the greatest of which was a place of high honour.  The Vestals date probably to the earliest days of the worship of Vesta.  There were six virgins, and they served for 30 years.  Prospective members of the order were chosen by lot by the Pontifex maximus and had to be between six and ten years old; girls from free but not necessarily Patrician families.  Immediately upon being named, the candidate left the authority of her parents and became a child of Vesta.  Entry into her new home, the Atrium of Vesta, near the goddesses's temple, was followed by the shaving of her hair and the reception of the attire of the Vestals.  The next 10 years were spent in training, then 10 in service, and a final 10 in preparing successors.

The primary duty of a Vestal Virgin was to care for the eternal hearth of Vesta.  The flame could not be allowed to die.  If it did, punishments were meted out by the pontifaxmaximus.  They alsio offered daily sacrifices, said prayers and participated in the festivals of the goddess and those of the goddess Bona Dea.  Vestals always wore white, with a headband called the infula that was decorated with ribbons and covered with a veil at the time of sacrifice.

Aside from the distinctive dress there were many other priviliges and powers.  They had a lictor with them everywhere, had special seats at all public events and never took oaths, their words were considered sacred.  The Vestals could also save a criminal if they met the accused on the way to prison or to execution, and they granted immunity from attack to anyone who was with them. They also handled secret documents and wills.

Their code of behaviour had to remain above reproach.  Even the slightest offence warranted censure from the pontifex maximus or the chief vestal, the virgo Vestalis Maxima.  For violating chastity the punishment was death by live burial, and the lover was beaten to death with rods.  At the end of 30 years, any retired Vestal was allowed to marry.  This was a rare occurence though, because it was deemed inauspicious to marry a former vestal.

P.S. The Vestal Virgins were not (as a comment above suggests) the only priestesses in ancient history.  The Egyptians had priestesses, as did the Sumerians and the Greeks.

  3. priestesses who tended the sacred fire in the temple of Vesta in ancient Rome and remained celibate during their servitude.

There is a lot of info about them in the link below.
