  1. Actually, there are some serious problems with planting trees to combat global warming. 1). You can't possible plant enough to offset the CO2 produced by human activity.  I was associated with a study that looked at using forests to manage CO2 in the late 80s-early 90s (global warming was a major scientific issue then).  It has to be just part of a response.  It can't be the only response.

2). The trees may need more care if the climate changes so much that they do not have adequate water.  They will probably become more drought tolerant as CO2 concentration increases, but if they die or parts die, they could become a sources of CO2 rather than sinks and a wildfire hazard.  It is very important to match species with range to ensure they grow well and a range shift doesn't kill them.

I don't think any of this says don't plant them though.  It can only help if done with some common sense.

  2. The only "problem" with planting trees is this is the most effective way of dealing with CO2, and the cheapest.  But it cuts out the middleman and no carbon credit taxes have to be paid to private investors.  Sounds good to me.

  3. Zero

  4. You won't be doing it but you will get your gardener to do it.  God forbid if you get your hands dirty and ruin your nails.

  5. I can't think of any...  I look at all the grass around my apartment complex and the people who cut it every week or two and can't help but wonder why.  Forget all this grass!!!  Let's plant trees and food!!!

I have a friend who took all his grass out and put shell over it.  No more lawn mower!!!

about soMEone has made the best point so far.

What is John talking about?  I'm ignorant on those things.  Does the government want more carbon in the air?  Time for a revolution!

  6. Here are 2 arguments, but they are not proven, but hypotheses and many people disagree with these speculations. I cannot seem find a clear cut reason to not plant a tree. I included the link for you.

Trees planted in tropical regions have a clear net cooling

effect, trees planted in mid-latitudes may absorb so

much heat from the sun that they actually contribute to

    warming.

Because tree leaves are dark, they also absorb

sunlight, which increases the temperature near the earth’s surface. The difference between trees in tropical latitudes and those in mid-latitudes has to do with the difference in how much sunlight forests reflect compared to other possible surfaces, such as grass or crops.

“Shiny” surfaces reflect more sunlight back into the atmosphere than forest vegetation, resulting in less heat trapped near the earth’s

surface. Large-scale tree planting projects that replace highly reflec-tive surfaces with forests will result in more heat trapped near the ground during winter.

  7. There are no cons about planting a tree.  Period.

I believe 'global warming' is cyclical and not man made and that it is done and we're cooling now.

But planting trees is always good!

  8. I read some of the answers and no one mentioned that people don't need to plant trees. I live in the middle of nowhere, and have 5 acres. Trees drop seedlings and grow on their own. Think about it, who planted the forest, no one. Where I live there forest every where, and nobody planted the trees. I have 3 acres of woods, I have a problem with pine trees because they grow any where and every where.

  9. Considering that 98% of carbon uptake and oxygen production is provided by ALGAE, I'd recommend we deal with oceanic acidity, instead.

less than TWO PERCENT of the entire globe's photosynthesis takes place on ALL THE WORLD'S LAND.

The rest goes on in the water.

    ...

O : Thank you! Very kind. Also, Heretic makes a compelling argument for vegetation (and i prefer the FOOD argument over trees...look into permaculture and gardening by the square-foot) on land. Much of the acid hitting the oceans is from run-off. Good points, all. Thanks.

  10. PLANTING DOES'NT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH GLOBAL WARMING
