Give your serial # to any Merc dealer, and they can tell you the motors year and history.  Unless, of course, the motor is stolen, then you lose!

If you look at the plate on the right side of the motor (when facing forward), it  will have either 19xx or 20xx printed on the second line.  The last 2 digits will tell you the year.  See the illustration on the attached link.  Good luck.
