We are not going to change to  HD ( high definition) its already here.  What you mean is digital. All the channel in Uk going to change to digital in 2012. You can still use your old tv and video(VCR) but you must purchase a digital box. Hope that makes it clear for you.

On February 17, 2009, all US TV broadcasters are required to turn off their older analog transmitters and be exclusively digital. This will affect Over The Air (OTA) viewers only.

OTA viewers will need to either upgrade to a digital TV or purchase a digital converter box. You've got it wrong, you don't change to HD, what broadcasts are changing to is Digital signals, starting Feb 1, 2009.  If your TV runs on cable, you don't need to do anything.  If you're running an old TV on rabbit ears and roof antennas, then you don't need to change your TV, but you will need to buy a converter box to enable your TV to receive the new signals.  You can get a $40 coupon for a converter box here, maximum of two coupons per household (and only one coupon allowed on the purchase of a single converter box):

There is no plan to change to HD at present. What you may be thinking of is digital TV. You don't need to change your TV, if you have sky you already have digital, if not you buy a set top box for less than £20 and away you go. No problems!
