because they are considered essential. what do you think would happen if they suddenly stopped?

while i certainly see your point let's think of what happens without the railways.  that new car you'd like to buy.  if you had to compensate for trucking that car across the country by highway the cost would increase enormously.  and consider the coal cars and the tankers full of god knows what.  the boxcars full of cargo.

without the railways you could forget about driving on the highways, they would be choked with semis.
