ok this question might be a little difficult for those with a low iq, but here goes ...

i'm looking for a wireless ip cam that can "automatically connect" to the best open network, if that's what you tell it to do.

you know, like in other words, "you don't have to setup any modem or router information yourself.

windows has this feature as well as many handheld palm devices

thankyou and here is an example of a regular wireless ip cam

  1. That is hard to answer. But the best thing I can think of is to check the hardware of the cam, and/or software for the cam. For the most part it comes down to the software that you will be using for the cam. If the software can do it for you, as you said Windows does that, then its no problem. If you plan on using the software that comes with cam, or some other 3rd party software then check and see if then can do that.

  2. Not that I could find when I had a client needing this functionality about 3 months ago.

This product is very very cool though http://www.sapido.com.tw/EN/products-3.5...

It will allow you to turn a usb camera into a wireless IP camera with autoconnect. Or alternatively as USB cameras are usually c**p you can plug a high end IP camera into it.

Unfortunately it uses mains power but if you are handy you can bypass this and use your own 12v transformer that will give it the needed 5V. Supports DDNS, DHCP passthrough etc and is a much cheaper solution. As they retail for about US$100

If this is for a bulk order 100+ units then I can have my supplier change the firmware of one of their existing cameras to do what you want... I only needed one so I didn't bother.
