  1. Hey there,

The answer above is very correct and I must point out this question is asked many times.

The confusion is over the reason why you may need a passport.

Because of the Common Travel Area you will not be required to carry a passport for customs/immigration purposes.

This is not the case for many other nationals entering the republic.

However with increased security   airlines etc are required to check peoples identity and this is where a passport (or other  approved photo id) is needed purely as an identity document.

so in reality a passport is an easy way to meet the requirements ...

Check with the ferry company or the airline if you need to know.

Good luck and enjoy your trip home....

  2. No you don't. There is a Common Travel Area between the UK and Ireland. However, if you are flying over, you will need photo identification (check with your airline what they need, cos it varies from one to the other). Even on the ferry they are entitled to ask you for ID but they aren't as strict as the airlines.

    here's some info:

The Common Travel Area means that there are no passport controls in operation for Irish and UK citizens travelling between the two countries. Since 1997, some controls are in effect on arrivals in Ireland from the UK but this does not mean that you are required to carry your Irish or UK passport with you when you travel between the countries. You must, however, carry an acceptable form of photo-identification, examples of which are:

    A valid passport

    A driver's licence with photo

    An international student card

    A national ID card

    A bus pass with photo

    A Garda ID with photo

    A work ID with photo

  3. o know that if you are travelling with either aer lingus or ryanair that the only form of photo id they accept is a valid passport as i was caught out only months ago by this!!!
