depending on the router, it may be set that your information is public (but you can choose not to share files when you connect), as for your passwords, they cannot be viewed.

Yes and no...they have the ability to with certain software and tools - that's why it's a bad idea to use public/unsecure networks with private data.  They can't just open Internet Explorer or something and see everything though.
