  1. The safest place on earth to be (except for Japan), when an earthquake takes place, is Zakynthos. This island is wholy rebuilt after a big earthquake many years ago and the buildings are very safe. Earthquakes happen everyday in Greece. It's not something weird. All these geological phenomena have contributed to the beauty of the greek islands and landscapes. This specific earthquake is already forgotten by the greek media, although it happened yesterday. The only victims were 2 people that were shocked by it and had a heart attack.

My only advice is to be very careful when you go to Laganas, because it is the place (unique in Greece) where the endagered species of sea turtle kareta-kareta lays its eggs. So just show respect to the nature and don't disturb the animals.

With acknowledgments to little miss cutie.

Most earthquakes in Greece are minor, don't worry.

  3. I am an American living in Greece living here for 32 years, and has survived many an earthquake with nary a scratch on me.  They last about 20 seconds and many times you do not even notice them since they are every day occurrences and they are taken i stride.  Whether the earthquake registers 6.1 or 6.5 on the Richter scale is only significant to scientists and engineers.  The others who discuss these numbers do it mostly from self-importance in an attempt to show off their knowledge.   Most of the damage is in badly constructed buildings or buildings built illegally on landfills.  I assume you will be staying at a hotel while on Zakynthos and hotels in Greece are constructed with the strictest of earthquake engineering standards.  You may want to check this web site out for comments on the earthquake that occured yesterday by another non-Greek (you will never get the real story from the locals since they are inclined to "overdramatize.") The site is www.livingingreece.gr .I would suggest that you visit another nearby island in the Ionian Sea, Paxos.  Check out  the most beautifully located hotel in the Ionian at www.paxosbeachhotel.gr I have been staying there for many years and it is superb from the view, to the hospitality, to the food in the reasonably priced restaurant.  Hope I've helped.

  4. I live in Kefalonia and can see Zakynthos from my house. Yes it was quite a big earthquake yesterday 6.5 and disrupted all the planes for a day as it damaged the air traffic controllers mast near Patra.

The epicentre was southern greece so there was no damage in the Ionian islands. We just felt a long rumble like a train going past! All the buildings are built to withstand earthquakes. Dont let it spoil your holiday. It is beautiful here.

  5. hi i just got back from zakynthos yesterday 9-6-08. we were staying in laganas and experienced the earthquake. it wasnt anything bad the ground just shook a bit. it was greece that was hit bad. the lady behind the bar said that they wont have another for a few months so you will be save. it is a strange feeling but nothing scary and certainly nothing to worry about. hope you have a great time. the weather was great when i was there.
