Friction is a complicated phenomenon because it works on such a small level.  To be able to predict the amount of friction very accurately, you would need to know the local topology (shape) of the material, down to the atomic level.  Additionally, once friction occurs, the topology changes.

It's nearly impossible to solve such a problem, even with supercomputers.  Friction between metals is complicated enough, but a soft and anisotropic material like fabric only makes the problem worse.

abrasion is hard to measure because no one really understands what friction truly is.
