Someone owns a big chunk of forest that is managed for its wood products; timber, pulp, etc. These are existing trees, in an existing forest that is being farmed. The owners agree it let some of the trees get a little older before they cut them down and send them to market. For that delay in harvesting, they are allowed to claim and to sell carbon credits. But the carbon credits purchased are not being use to offset current carbon generation. The credits are banked for some future sale. It should be noted that these trees or the trees that are replanted when these are harvested were going to consume this carbon anyway. No new carbon consumption is taking place.



Depending on your view of Global warming this is an innovative solution to a national problem or it is the biggest scam ever foisted on the public. But whether scam or innovation, carbon trading may soon be required by our Federal Government. Cap and Trade laws, I fear, are inevitable.
