Can anybody give me a list of a few items that have many different uses?

Before even buying the gift, I told my friend the other day that I was getting him something for his birthday that can be used for many different things. Now I need some ideas on what to get him cause I'm drawing a blank

  1. Maybe you should have thought about this BEFORE you told him what you were getting...but, anyway, the first thing that came to my mind was one of those Swiss Army Knives, would he like those?
