  1. I don't quite know what you mean by "white coal" but several power plants here in the Midwest are experimenting with bio-mass (corn cobs and wood shavings) with success. The problem is that not all plants can burn this type of fuel. The one i work at has this problem.

    Nope, I mean plain old corn cobs and wood shavings. Thats some great information though!!!


  2. "White coal" is a name with many uses.

    It is commonly being used to refer to the "upgrading" of lignite or sub-bituminous coal into "bituminous" coal briquettes.

    It is sometimes used to mean hydroelectric power.

    In the past, it was basically a kiln-dried wood.  Essentially, wood baked over an open fire, but not to the point that it carbonized (became charcoal).

    And then there is the reference to agricultural bi-products, and what I think you mean.  Briquettes of this "white coal" are made by crushing together plant material (along with a binding agent).  The wet briquettes are then passed through a medium temperature furnace, during which time they dry out.  The result is basically a tight ball of very dry cellulose.
