  1. I would look at Montessori, Erikson, and Piaget.  Those are 3 of the biggest ones.

Currently Howard Gardener's theory of multiple intelligences is highly used.  This is a theory that is based on the knowledge that not all children learn in the same way.  There are multiple ways that children learn such as by hearing, seeing, doing, etc.  Basically this is saying that you can't just lecture and have children take notes because it is proven that this is not effective for all children.  In my career and now in my center we do a lot of learning through play.  If you search his name you will find an infinite number of things.

  3. Trevarthen for work on communication. Paley for play..Athey esp for schemas. Some of the pioneers such as Steiner,Pestalozzi, Bruner and Froebel are all relevant today.
