My friend helped me sweep off an insect from the back of my shirt this morning so I couldn't see what it looked like as it flew away. I want to identify this insect. The following descriptions are by my friends.

Its very big, slightly bigger than the circle you create by pressing the tips of your middle finger and thumb together. Huge, I know. It has six legs, so my friend says. It has black wings and a pair of long feelers. Its reddish brown and she claims that its very very big and scary. If I'd seen it, she said, I would have fainted with fright.

So please help me identify this scary insect!!!!!!!!

  1. Based on personal experience and without a photo, my best guess is that it might have been a Tarantula hawk. They are large scary looking bugs with black bodies, reddish orange wings and large antenna. They are found in different places in the US and their territory is growing out of their native desert type habitat. I was stung by one that I found buzzing around my house---of course, that was after I tried to kill it with a newspaper multiple times. They are usually mild tempered, and relatively non aggressive.

I had never seen one before or even hear of them, but after piling through hundreds of photos on the internet I finally found the bug that I had seen. Maybe it's the same one that you saw too. Hope this helps.
