Allah says,"...........and get two witnesses, out of your own men, and if there are not two men, then a man and two women, such as ye choose, for witnesses, so that if one of them errs, the other can remind her.) (Al-Baqarah 2:282)"

Is that being sexist?

Pls give me the intended intention of Allah's verse.I don' think Allah or Prophet simply makes things unfair to women..

Salam and thanks

  1. Salam sister,

well it doesn't relate to sexist anyway, and yes their is a wisdom behind it, actually it is approved by the science that women in certain days of the month are not in the normal psychologically and mentally conditions, and that some crimes that occur in front of them they may not fully absorb the details due to its horribleness and shock, so she is in need of the testimony of another woman supporting her, considering some crimes needs FOUR men to witness it.

  2. hey mathew keep your ugly big mouth shut!

    salam alayum.

i think it's cuz women are more important than man and therefore only 1 man and 2 women.

    'Is that being sexist?'

maybe a muslim amn would say why only 1 man and why not 2 men. but i think what Allah has done is for the good and it might be a test for the men to see if they're patient or not!

    Tafsir al-Jalalayn  says :-

"; the number of women is because of the fact, so that if one of the two women errs, forgets the testimony, given their lesser astuteness and accuracy; the other, the one remembering, will remind her (read fa-tudhakkira or fa-tudhkira), the one that has forgotten — the ‘reminding’ clause is the reason [for the choice of two women], that is to say, so that she may be reminded if she errs or strays into error, because this [forgetfulness] is the cause of it (a variant reading [for an, ‘that’] has the conditional in, ‘if’, with [the verb inflected as] tudhakkiru, ‘she will remind’, making it a new sentence, the response to which [follows]);"

  5. The verse deals with business as said above, almost every single company out there in this world is owned by a man.

  6. I think it's because women are more emotional than men and they may proceed to give a warped or negative view on a subject when asked about it...

Men on the other hand generally stay calm and can give a balanced view.

It's not because Allah thought women were lesser - simply because He thought than men could give a fairer view at trial.

  7. your "forgot" to post the whole verse which makes it clear this is for financial transactions

    QURAN, 2:282:

O Beleivers, when you contract a debt for a fixed term,

you should put it in writing....

.....And let two men from among you bear witness to all

such documents.  But if two men are  not available,

there should be one man and two women to bear

witness so that if one of the women forgets (anything),

the other may remind her   ......

This is because women had less expertise in finacial matters than men. In areas where they have more expertise (for example suckling a child) their testimony is worth twice that of a man

So its about expertise not gender

  8. This verse is about business contracts. I have read one opinion by a scholar (at SOAS I beleive, I can't remember) who says that it was revealed like that because at that point, as women were viewed as a man's property and were just there to show how rich he was and make him feel important, almost no women were educated or allowed near business concerns (Khadija ahs was an exception, not a rule), so because of their inexperience, two of them should should be wittnesses to help each other. It is his interpretation that where women are properly educated, this verse is abrogated.

  9. there's actually no logic behind that...sorry to be a bit disrespectful, but it, actually isnt right for a man to have two women at the same time...It violates the proper ethics and also womens right to fairness and equality...it's just not right...

  10. hello dear, quranic verses should be interpreted in their context, and in this particular one the issue is in finding a witness for a contract, and as you may know, islam came in arabia , where women were not allowed to have property, and they were considered inferior and not to be trusted, islam allowed women to have property and allowed them to be witnesses in contracts, but because women were not accostumed to this previously, islam required that two women should testify , so you can consider islam as being progressive for its time, not sexist, and remember, the quran came 15 hundred years ago

  11. women are born in such a way that they are more emotional than men. (its not something negative, its something just different than men). so on certain occassions, women could be driven up or down by emotions, once they are triggered emotionally. thats the whole point, you need to understand the biological and psychological difference between the sexes which they are born with. the affairs have to be managed accordingly. thus such laws.

  12. ummm actually they DO simply make things unfair for women.  Open your freakin eyes.  Islam is probably the worlds most sexist religion.
