Question:

Can anybody recommend a curriculum that's not so religious?

We used to do Sonlight. We really liked it and we could pretty much just omit the religious stuff. Now they're doing 5th/6th grade stuff and Sonlight seems to be getting very focused on the religious stuff. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I'm looking for a history and science curriculum that tells just the facts. And not changed facts, but the way things truly are. Are suggestions? Thanks

  1. I would recommend that you check into Calvert, Oak Meadow, Amanda Bennett's Unit Study Series, Great Source, Learning Language Arts through Literature (plus something like Singapore Math).   That is all I can think of for now.

This homeschooling mom has created a wonderful list of secular sources:

    Good luck!

  2. I use several different curriculums. For math I use JUMP Math, Science we use the "4 kids" series, like "Chemistry 4 Kids" as well as scholasic books. I use websites like www.brainpop.com and www.enchantedlearning.com and www.pokemonlearningleague.com. Basically I just use a lot of different resouces to teach. I have found that to work best for us.

  3. K12 is secular.  They use a lot of the same books that Sonlight does.  Their history and science are wonderful.  The art is great, also, and it ties into history.

We've used K12 for over five years.  We love it!

  4. Used text books from the public school are available at many used book stores.  The library also has a wealth of material.

  5. TRISMS :-) http://trisms.com/

It's got the things you most likely enjoyed about Sonlight without any particular worldview "bent".  It's literature and research based, but you get to pick the resources (they give you options, but you can choose whatever you want).

The middle school version, History Makers, can be used over two years with 5th-7th graders.  My 10yo 5th/6th grader will be starting it next summer, and is really excited about it.  They have enough volumes to easily carry the kids through high school, and it covers every subject except for lab science and math.  (It covers the history of both.)

And after Sonlight, you'll probably love the prices - $150 for 2 years of middle school, $150 per year after that :-)

You can then choose a math and science curriculum that fits your needs.  TRISMS has kids research the history behind the science, including worldviews, social issues happening around the events/discoveries/inventions, and repercussions (good and bad) of the changes that happened due to discoveries.  I like that it helps kids learn how to develop their own worldviews through research, rather than telling them one way or another what they should think.

    Anyway, hope it helps!

  6. K12 ALL THE WAY! I am in 10th grade, i have done it for 7th 8th 9th and 10th. My two younger brother and cousin are in is along with my little sister. That are 8th 9th 7th and 1st grade right now. But have been in it for a few years with me too.

  7. I have no idea who this person is, but this the most comprehensive list of secular curricula I've ever seen.
