  1. Try the "Great Brain" series by John D. Fitzgerald.  I loved them when I was young.

Also try the "Wizard of Oz" books.  There's about 40 in the series, although L. Frank Baum only wrote the first 14.

  2. Most Enid Blyton books. I used to read the Famous Five and Secret Seven books.

  3. Bruce Coville.  Any of his Magic Shop books are fantastic.  If the 10-year-old is into ghost stories, he has a series that starts with The Ghost in the Third Row.

  4. Magyk, Flyte, Physik and Queste by Angie Sage

The Silver Child, The Silver City...... by Cliff McNich

Wolfbrother, Spirit Walker, Soul Eater by Michelle Paver

All of these are series, check them out x x

  5. You don't mention the gender of the child, but when I was ten I loved C.S. Lewis's Narnia books, which seem to appeal alike to boys and girls.

'I also enjoyed Arthur Ransome's 'Swallows and Amazons' series, which also seem to appeal to both boys and girls.  Also Enid Blyton's 'Famous Five' series which also appeals to girls and boys.

'The Phantom Tolbooth' by Norton Juster was another book I really liked, and 'Stig of the Dump' by Clive King.  Both books seem to appeal to girls and boys.

'The Little White Horse' by Elizabeth Goudge, and 'A Traveller in Time' by Alison Uttley were also books I really liked, both are more likely to appeal to girls.  Likewise Elizabeth Enright's books 'Thimble Summer' 'The Saturdays' 'The Four Storey Mistake' etc, are I think probably likely to appeal more to girls.

I've never been a big fan of Roald Dahl, but his books seem to be very popular with children of that age, though I've never liked them that much.

Terry Pratchett's trilogy 'Only YOu Can Save Mankind' 'Johnny and the Dead' and 'Johnny and the Bomb' are very good fantasy stories for that age.

My sons love the Hiccup books by Cressida Cowell, about a Viking boy trying to learn to be a viking warrior, they are full of the kind of humour that boys love.  The first one is 'How to Train your Dragon'.
