Can anybody tell me goa or diu will be better for a short break from beach point of view?

Well, it does depend on what ur looking for in ur break!

Diu is a very small place, literally! Its a Union Territory just off Gujrat. Diu's most famous beach is unfortunately its worst. In fact, diu is infamous for guys bringing in call girls from gujrat to over weekends. BUT, theres a nice place there. Technically its not actually in Diu but in Gujrat. The hotel is called Magico do Mar and is situated right on the gujrat diu border. The hotel has great cottages with doors opening out to almost private beach. As gujrat has prohibition in force not many ppl clome to this place. But its one of the best places i have ever stayed in anywhere in india. Nice clean secluded beach and great cottages with good food. and no getting booze wasnt a problem at all.

From Diu u can visit Shashan Gir which is a Lion reserve and pay homage at Somnath temple. Some caves here and there and a couple of churches. Thats all diu is.

We hired bikes and toured the small island. If you're expecting it to be as good as goa, u'll be disappointed. Go there only if u've been to other beach places and just want to try something new or are really close to it and have only a day or two in hand. And check out Magico do Mar before any other place in diu.

Goa is very well known, probably the most written about place in India. You'll enjoy in northern part its calangute, anjuna and vagatore beaches if what ur looking for is a lively holiday. Lots of ppl and lots of fun activities. Head to southern Goan beaches of colva and Palolem for sheer beauty and serene stay. Lots of stuff happens in goa and u wont feel left out at all.
