Go to where it says action on your yahoo messenger and then press where it Say's "Send Instant message." Then press the "Other contacts" tab and put his/her username in.

I am assuming that by username you are not refering to the userid but your friend's name. Since you made reference to "yahoo ID".

Firstly try doing a search at http://members.yahoo.com/

If it is not there, even Yahoo customer care will not release this information unless there's a court order. Yahoo is bound by individual privacy rights and will not release the Yahoo ID even if you provide the user's name.

Your best bet is to do a google/yahoo search of your friend's name in the hope that it might bring you to a forum that might have a record of his email address publicly displayed.
