Depends what country you live in.....places like USA and Australia are useless for anything older than about 250 years.

Here in England if you live near the country or seashore there is plenty of opportunity to find ancient coins and artifacts from pre-Roman times onwards.

Apart from beaches (search at low tides for best results) you have to ask permission from the landowner. Avoid woods and pathways because they are not easy to dig. The best place is open fields after harvest time in late August/September.

Once you have plucked up courage to ask a farmer you will be surprised how helpful they can be. Always call them before going on their land, and at the end of the day make a point of showing them your finds and asking if they want anything.

beach, fields, woods big open places where ppl are likely to lose things alternatively someone else's house mite turn up better results but you better ask them for permission first tho...

Parks, especially after the weekend or a celebration--say, 4th of July!!!  

My ex had a lot of fun with  his metal detector.

School playgrounds, where they have travelling fairs, around the entrances of old houses, you have to plan a little. take a small garden trowel and return the ground you dig to as close as it was before.
