SR-71 does not meet the criteria of being a Fighter. The MiG 25 probably has the fastest speed that has been reported.

It is worth mentioning that performance figures given out to the public on combat aircraft are rarely accurate. This is true of every nations aircraft.  Such data is pretty much classified, as well as the aircraft in inventory are constantly being upgraded.

Sheer speed is one thing, but since the development of effective missiles in surface to air and air to air combat, 'fighter' aircraft are more of a weapons platform than a 'dog-fighter'... high rates of speed are desirable, but this is not the main consideration in fighter/interceptor development.

The Russian MIG-25 supposedly was capable of Mach 3.2 and was developed to intercept the SR-71 although it could not sustain that speed for very long whereas the SR-71, which was purely a surveillance plane, could.

The YF-12 a fighter version built along side the SR-71. While it looked like a SR-71 it was not as it was had smaller overall dimensions. The YF-12 was not put into full production but quite a few examples were built and used for experimental purposes.

The Mig 25 remains the fastest fighter ever built.    

That's about all it can do, go fast, but it is d**n fast.    Made for running down bombers in a hurry.   Won't maneuver very well, though.

SR71 wasn't a fighter, and the F-22 isn't even close in speed.
