  1. Only thru previous experiences that security has had with that person.  If they recognize you in the store, they will escort you out.

  2. Dept stores watch you like Hawks!! I worked at a Macy's and believe me there are cameras everywhere and the security guards are undercover all the time they look the average Joe shopping so you never know when you are being watched either on camera or by the Guards.

  3. they can't

  4. A lot depends on the store and whatever it was you did to get banned in the first place.  The stores that I know about have a "black list" but they only pay attention to a portion of the list.

Sometimes the stores will catch someone stealing, but rather than call the police they let the person go if he/she promises not to come back.  They will often make the thief sign a document and may even take his or her picture.  If that's what happened to you, they are dead serious about keeping you out.  There will be watch lists, and if they catch you in the store (or see your name when you use a credit card, for example), they will be there in a flash.  For example, some stores, like Lord & Taylor, actually have people inside the columns on the sales floor.  ÃƒÂ…nd of course there are cameras all over the place.

But most of the time, the head of security has no more than a mental picture of you, and if you don't draw attention to yourself, you won't be noticed.  Obviously, going back the next day, or even the next week, would not be smart.  But three or six months later, your chances of being caught would be very small.
