Can anyone explain how to work out and understand a bolus dose through an IV infusion. A formula please.?

I am really confussed calculating a "Bolus dose" and the continuous dose, any help would be most appreciate.

  1. It would help if you were more specific. Practically speaking, a 250 ml saline bolus in a frail, elderly person with a long list of medical problems is pretty aggressive. In shocky little kids, a starting bolus of about a quarter of the total blood volume, or around 20 ml/kg, is pretty common, and is frequently repeated a time or two, until an effect is seen.  And there are almost as many formulae for calculating maintenance fluids as there are doctors using them. And that touches only on generalities, not counting things like the Parkland burn formula.


  2. not sure of the formula but ...wouldn't you use...the rate of infusion by (X)= the total dose prescribed in the specific time frame...the max rate of infusion during bolus is needed for accurate dosing as opposed to setting the interval of infusion.....????? If that does not help then hopefully it triggered a answer to you question ...best wishes!!! !
