Can anyone explain the chemical role of water in photosynthesis

I understand that the water is broken down during photosynthesis but i don't understand its real chemical role...does it create energy or does it split to create another substance??? please help!

  1. Photolysis is the splitting of water by light.

    2H2O-->4H+  +4 electrons  + O2.

    The electrons replace the electrons displaced from Photosystem II by light and the H+ are used to make NADPH which is later used in the dark stage (Calvin Cycle) to reduce CO2.


  2. The splitting of water molecule bonds creates energy, which can be used in the making of other substances such as oxygen and glucose.

    Also the elements in water eg oxugen and hydrogen, are essentials in glucose.
