  1. That is ubuntu. it is a linux based operating system. This wikipedia will give you everything you need to know about it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu. The other information will be from my experiences.

I suppose you have windows. I am going to compare the two so you can decide wether or not it is worth while switching.

    SECURITY

One of the main reasons installed it because their is almost no need for

antispyware and antivirus. They have clam av but only like 2% of microsoft viruses can effect the linux operating system. To tell you the truth they are not really harmful.  Whenever you install anything you they ask for your password so that way usually nothing bad can happen to your pc. Updates are readily available. The interface is great.

It takes some time getting used to it. I feel that it is better organized than windows.

    BAD PARTS OF LINUX

Its funny how someone said that "you can do everything with linux, but their is nothing to do". Some files you need to type sudo apt-get  in the command console to install programs. The closest things to exe files are deb packages, the things you click and it installs like aim.exe installs aim. Not allot of programs support Linux, but their is a very wide variety of free programs that people made for it. apt-get install unrar is used in the console so you can use rar files. I had to search to find that out. Linux did not tell me. To install most proprietary software you would have to do that. Since programs like winrar private format it cannot be included in operating systems at the start legally.

Overall I like linux...but it will not be mainstream until it is more user friendly in terms of installing programs. Overall there are no games to play, except free ones. It will not compare to gears of war though. Another thing there is a program called wine. It emulates windows programs but it does not run smoothly for everything. I use linux to go to dangerous websites or pay bills because it is safer. You cannot run aim and other popular software, but they have great alternatives. Pidgin is used for msn yahoo aim and many others. It takes little resources so it will slow down your pc less. The only problem is that you cannot use some special features. You can still direct connect and send files but things like nudges cannot be experienced. So try it out if you want to. It is not bad. The thing is you may feel that you cannot do certain things becuase the windows program you used is not compatiable with linux, but in actuality their is a free program for linux that will do the same and maybe even better. Deluge which runs great on linux is the best torrent downloader for linux, but it does not run well on windows. Things like that you will just have to search and find out.
