Can anyone explain the logic of the freaky border between Canada and USA around Lake of the Woods area ?

In the 1840s, the British and the Americans were about to go to war over the border between the USA and British North America in the west. The King of Prussia was called in as an arbitrator and he declared that the border would run along the 49th Parallel from Lake of the Woods to the middle of the Strait of Georgia. However, accurate maps were not yet available at the time, hence the weirdness at Lake of the Woods. And no sane person has wanted to open the issue ever since, much less start a war over a bit of land in the middle of nowhere.

For another interesting anomaly, do a search for "Point Roberts". This is a part of the USA you can only drive to by going through Canada.
