Can anyone explain the word CHAV to me?

I know what a CHAV is, but where did the word come from and how long has it been in use?

  1. the original useage of the word Chav was used by the irish gypsy travellers... thats what they used to call young people.

    i suppose that people saw these travelling kids who lived in caravans, wore fake designers and lots of jewlery and catched on.

    nowdays it means a young person who is a lout, wears fake designers, lots of jewlery, is scruffy. and wears sports clothes.

    you can see the connection.

  10. in England it means a hooligan like a football hooligan, someone causing trouble, hangs around in gangs on corners etc...

    in Ireland it means a pretty boy, diamond in the ear, spotless white runners, the pink striped shirt, tan skin... u know the type..

    so it means two things!
