  1. Basically, you must know how to act in public, or people will stare you down until you do.

    The 'sour face' in Emerson's 'Self Reliance' is the face you put on when you answer an everyday question that you don't care about, such as "How was your day?" When you answer "It was fine," you forceably put on a 'sour' face.

    If you do not conform, people will stare at you with a look of 'rebuke and warning.' This is the 'displeasure' Emerson talks about in this quote.

    Therefore, a man must know how to estimate a sour face in order to put one on.
